Prithviraj’s Ranam - Detroit Crossing, is the actor’s second attempt at a crossover film after Ivide, which saw him play the role of a disturbed cop. In Ranam, Prithviraj doesn’t play the good guy, and he is, in fact, a thug who works for one of Detroit’s underworld bosses, played by Rahman. Prithviraj is seen as a high-end drug peddler for upscale parties where the net worth of drugs sold would be $300,000.
Prithviraj’s character is done working for his boss and he wants to move on from a life of crime, but like any boss who deals with smuggling and other illegal activities, Rahman’s character doesn’t let go that easily. This results in a lot of violence and a turf war between the kingpin and a man who was once his underling. All Prithviraj wants to do in the end is to be left alone, and his boss eggs him on to fight and find his weaknesses to achieve what he wants.
Isha Talwar plays a pivotal role in the film and she could very well be the reason why Prithviraj’s character wants to change. In one scene, she says that she would like to move on and the only way that is possible is if she leaves town. Not just her, Prithviraj’s character is also told that until he is in Detroit, everyone will know him as the boss’ man and it may be impossible to escape from under his shadow.
This gangster drama is directed by Nirmal Sahadev and bankrolled by Anand Payyanur and Lawson Biju under the banner of Yes Cinema Company and Lawson Entertainment. The film is slated to release on September 6.
Ranam and Ivide both deal with a lead character who hails from India and finds himself in the USA due to certain circumstances. How the two lead characters navigate a foreign land, a country that is not their own and make a living, is the essence of the plot.
